A Service Pattern Language #2
First call for contribution
We’ve launched the group as a space for collaboration and exploration around service design patterns in public services. We’re now gathering examples from different application flows, specifically around finding and starting a service.
Iterating guidance
We are improving the experience for everyone who uses GovStack UX guidelines and service patterns. We are reviewing and refining the content, layout, and structure to make the patterns simple to use and accessible.
➡️ Have you used or want to use the GovStack good practice service design guidelines or service patterns?
We want to learn:
what context have/would you use the guidelines or patterns (Prototyping, learning, benchmarking, etc.)
any terms or concepts that feel unclear or overly technical
how you find the content structure while navigating to access what you need
how the visual elements (the layouts, diagrams, or images) impact your understanding of the content
what would make these guidelines more inclusive or accessible for you or your team
how you have applied a specific pattern or guideline to your work
If you’d like to get involved and would be happy to speak with us get in touch with Betty Mwema (betty.mwema@digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk), discuss on our Slack or contribute using this board on Mural.
If you are currently creating or working on a design system we’d love to hear from you, to exchange ideas.
Testing patterns
Testing the existing content and patterns in real-world scenarios aka real, online services.
🔍 Comparing application journeys
We’re looking to hear about real-world examples of application-based services you’re working on – think Apply for a Construction Permit, Apply for a Fund, or Apply for a Visa Extension!
We’d love for you to share:
The Service: What’s the service about?
The Challenge: Any specific hurdles or UX-related issues you’re facing?
The Desired Outcome: What’s the end goal for users and service providers?
The first 2 flows that we can analyse are already laid out on the board: the application for the German countrywide transport ticket & the Estonian E-Residency application! 🇩🇪🇪🇪
Let’s gather inspiration and support each other in making these applications user-friendly and impactful. Looking forward to seeing what you’re working on! If you want to get involved get in touch with Stefan Draskic(stefdras@gmail.com) discuss on our Slack or contribute using this board on Mural.
Developing patterns
Expanding the pattern library based on common use-case services.
🔎 Finding and accessing a service
Starting at the beginning of the ‘apply for a thing’ user journey we are looking at developing patterns for:
Service catalogues or portals (places users go to find and access services)
Alternative routes to access services (if you can not use the online user journey)
✨ AI chatbots
We also had an interesting conversation with David Forden, Open Source AI Lead for Digital Public Services project under the ITU (International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency) Digital Services division. who is proposing a GovStack chat-bot building block which would support users to find, prepare for and apply for government services. We think that some of our guidance for service sheet/start pages could be adapted to by UI agnostic.
If you want to get involved or have examples to share get in touch with Laurence Berry (laurence@wearekomo), discuss on our Slack or contribute to this board on our Mural.
A conversation with…
We are looking to speak with and highlight people using of thinking about service patterns in their context for this series, please get in touch if your are interested!
